What You Will Need to get Started

bullet A connection to the Internet -  Small businesses and individuals often use an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

bullet A Web Browser - The two most popular web browsers are Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Some Web Browsers are commercial programs and others are available free of charge.

bullet A Web Server - (required if you host your own web pages) A Web Server is a computer network where your web pages are held and displayed on the internet. Through FTP (File Transfer Protocol), you can transfer your web pages back and forth from your computer to your web server. Web servers also accept connections from Web browsers.

  Additional Information

Some Commonly Used Terms

bullet

Domain Name - A domain name is a specific URL, that you purchase and own for a specific period of time, commonly for 1, 2 or 3 years. This domain name can be renewed when the current term of ownership expires.  It is the actual address that your visitors use to get to your pages. An example of a domain name is  www.<yourbusiness>.com

bullet Dedicated Web Host - Most ISPs provide web hosting services for a monthly fee above and beyond the standard charges of providing  an internet connection. The web host provides a place on the internet (server) where your web pages reside. You should check with your own ISP  to detemine if this option is the most cost effective for you.

bullet

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - is the format used in the Internet for sending files between two computers.

bullet Internet - A global network connecting millions of computers.  Each Internet computer, called a host, is independent. Internet users can choose which Internet service provider to use.

bullet

ISP Personal Web Space - Most ISPs run Web Servers that allow 5-10 MB of personal web space for each of their subscribers to place their own Web pages on a server.  For anyone that already has an Internet connection through an ISP, consider having your web pages stored here.  This is a great low-cost alternative to paying for web hosting services.

bullet Other Web Space Providers - There are many other web space providers on the Internet that provide either free or low cost web space. For only a minimal cost, you can have a significantly higher amount of free web space (20MB-50MB) that you can get with the ISP alone. However,  most of the free services usually require a  banner ad on your page(s). However, if you can live with the ad, you have a low cost web presence! Most of the lower cost options are free of advertising, however.  Again, a little research on your part will have a potentially big payoff in cost savings.

bullet

URL - is your web site address. When anyone logs on to the internet, in order to get to a specific web site they need to type in a specific Internet address (also know as a URL, which stands for Universal Resource Locator). This is similar to dialing a certain set of numbers on a telephone to call a specific individual.

bullet NOTE: You are responsible for purchasing and maintaining your own domain. I do not offer domain management services or web site hosting, only web site development, design and maintenance.
